Fully Funded!

Posted by Angie at 11:52 AM
On Tuesday afternoon, April 17th, at 4:15 pm, we found out that our adoption was fully funded.  FULLY FUNDED!  And I have been so excited to share!!  But let me back up a little.

When Future Papa and I first began discussing adoption as a serious option for "now," instead of later, one of our biggest concerns was the money.  We felt led to an international adoption, and an international adoption is expensive.  But when God tugs at your heart, opens your eyes, and gives you a sign, it's hard to say no, so we decided to step out in faith and begin this journey.  But we were scared.  Fundraising is scary.

The first few months of this blog, we started small.  I added a donate tab to share our story and I asked for fundraising ideas.  Our first major fundraising effort was in February 2011, with an online auction.  We raised $1016 and were thrilled!  From there, I started to get more creative.  We started a "Twenty for Taiwan" campaign and got our blog button posted on as many blogs as we could.  We also founded Leaves of Love for adoptive families, and raised a little money with our own tree.  Little by little, we gained donations!

But I still struggled with fear.  The amount we needed was large.  I blogged about my fears and my husband and I shared our fear, and our faith, at an adoption conference.  Though most supported our adoption as a mission, which many fund-raise for, we also attracted some verbal attacks for trying to raise money for adoption fees.  Future Papa and I saved every penny we could (examples being my "dates" anniversary gift, the "I love you because" birthday gift, and the wedding ornaments Valentine's Day gift).  We continued to fund-raise as opportunities presented themselves, like our partnership with Home for Hire.

In December we received a wonderful surprise--we were nearing the top of the list!  Nearly a year earlier than expected!  As we worked on our home study, we began to look into grants for adoptive families.  The number of grants is a bit overwhelming, quite frankly.  Eventually we stumbled across the JSC Foundation and felt they might be a perfect fit for us.  The application was lengthy, including recommendation letters, an interview with our pastor, numerous financial forms, and more.  We pulled together all the information, sealed it with a prayer, and mailed it off in March.

And on Tuesday afternoon, April 17th, at 4:15 pm, we found out that our adoption was fully funded.  When I opened the e-mail, I began to cry in my office.  I could hardly believe how God had provided for us.  Thousands and thousands of dollars He provided to create our family.  Quite honestly, I still get teary about it.  We hoped and prayed that they would award us something for our adoption, but never thought that JSC would be willing to pay for the remainder of our orphanage fees!

Of course, we still have our flights, our hotels, our food, and some paperwork fees to pay.  But thanks to the money we have already saved (and will continue to save in the coming months, according to our budget) and raised, we are going to be able to complete our adoption debt-free!  Praise God!

I share our story to encourage those adopting and considering adoption.  Future Papa and I could have been one of those couples who said "We'd like to adopt, but we can't afford it."  But, through a lot of hard work, though faith, through prayer, through the generosity of so many friends and family, and through this grant, we now come to you with an adoption that should be FULLY FUNDED.  We are so blessed, so thankful, and so in awe of all God has done for us.

Much love,
Future Mama

I have a quick question for you...we are currently in the process of adopting baby #2 and I had some questions about the JSC Grant. I applied for grants last time and am currently working on them now. Is this only for international, how does everything work? Would you ever be able to e-mail me bkmulder@hotmail.com. Thank you!!
