What are you waiting for?

Posted by Angie at 7:00 AM 7 comments
I began discussing the option of adoption with the future papa back when we were engaged.  It was something God put in my heart from a young age, and something that we became excited about pursuing...one day.  When we started talking seriously about children, the "w" word came up often.

When?

I imagine this is something that comes up with all young married couples.  When is it the right time to go from a family of two to a family of three?  Or, for some of you adopting mamas who are in pursuit of sibling groups, to a family of four or even five.  I can't even imagine!  When is it time to give up spur of the moment ice cream runs at midnight?  Late night movie marathons?  Sleeping past nine on Saturday mornings?  Turn our lives upside down?  Certainly, my biological clock is ticking, but it's ticking slowly.  We're young.  As far as we know, we've got lots of time.  And we love our life.

But God was pulling on our hearts.  My heart.  And signs started popping up EVERYWHERE!  (like that literal sign I talked about here) I met a girl in my graduate school program who could talk about adoption as long as I could.  We saw families with adopted kids at grocery stores (oh that awkward experience), restaurants, and our gym.  Our favorite television shows began running episodes on babies (anyone else watch How I Met Your Mother?!).  And even adoption.  Church sermons inspired us.  An adoption group invited us to join its founding committee.  You get the idea.

One night, I finally got the courage to bring up the topic adopting in the foreseeable future with one of my best friends.  This girl, who graduated with a psychology degree, has always been my voice of reason.  Honest, even when I don't want to hear it.  For that, I love her.  I braced myself for all the reactions I expected Meg to throw at me.  Why are you in a rush to have kids?  Aren't you too busy with school?  Really, Future Mama, adoption?

But, to my surprise, she gave me none of these.  She merely listened to my breathless, ten-minute rant, and asked:

What are you waiting for?

I literally froze.  Of all the scenarios I had run through my mind, this was not one of them.

What were we waiting for?  We live in a small, but cute home.  We have great friends, great families, and a great church.  We love our jobs, and while they don't pay a lot, we are financially stable.  We love our town.  We've got love to give.  What were we waiting for when there are literally, at this exact moment, millions of children waiting, wishing, praying for parents?

I ran across this song, coincidentally titled "What Are You Waiting For" by Natalie Grant, a couple weeks after having that talk with that friend.  It spoke to my heart.

Sometimes I get that
overwhelming feeling
so sad the faces on TV
If I tried to make a difference
would it help anyway
But then I stop and to
myself I say...

CHORUS:
So you wanna change the world
What are you waiting for
You say you're gonna start right now
What are you waiting for
It only takes one voice
So come on now and shout it out
Give a little more
What are you waiting for

Sometimes I feel a little helpless
Seems like I can't do a thing
But anything Is possible
just you wait and see
Good things happen if you
just believe....

CHORUS

Someday somehow
You're gonna take that step
Cause time is ticking away

Right here right now
Before it's too late
Gonna face tomorrow today

CHORUS

Future papa and I still go through waves where we wonder if now is the right time.  Should we be waiting?  Will we be good parents?  Are we ready?  And I inevitably hop online to look up more parenting books to add to our reading list.  But, deep down, we both confidently know that we are ready.  We are excited.  God will prepare us for the challenges ahead.  And that's a good feeling.

I worked in our church's two year old class this Sunday and oooohhh....those kiddos were precious!!!  They may get a post of their own tomorrow.  I'm curious, my lovely readers who are also mamas, how did you know that you were ready to have kids?

Much Love,
Future Mama

Sneaky...

Posted by Angie at 3:22 PM 1 comments
So you know that look kids get on their face when they are up to something?  It's a hard expression to describe, but you just know that they have something up their sleeve.  Kinda like this?
{source}
Try to picture me with that expression.  Except not as cute ;-)  I've been working on something...it's big...it's kinda related to fundraising...but it is also SO much more.  All I can say is...

Get Excited!

'Cause I promise it is just that awesome :-)

Side note: Thank you all for the prayers and wishes in relation to those nasty germs I talked about in my last post.  I am feeling much much better and hope to be back to my chatty, frequently posting self in no time.  Besides, I think those ants are off to find another disco hall...fingers crossed not in Future Papa!

Much love,
Future Mama

You know you're sick when...

Posted by Angie at 11:50 AM 6 comments
You know you're sick when...
  • Getting dressed means putting on a fresh pair of pjs
  • It feels like your throat is a disco hall...for fire ants
  • Filling a dark room with moans sounds like a capital way to spend your time
  • You force yourself to drink water like there is no tomorrow
  • Because you drank so much water, you have worn a path in the carpet to the bathroom
  • Your muscles are convinced they just ran a marathon...but you've hardly left your bed
  • And....your ears are popping more than they did when you landed in your child's birth country (oh yeah, an adoption reference, boo yah!)
Ugh...that's right folks...I caught the germs that have been going 'round.  Considering I work for a huge university and that many of my students have resembled the walking dead lately, I suppose it was only a matter of time.  Today was the first day in weeks that I did not have a day full of meetings, presentations, and classes on campus.  That's good, because I can stay home all day.  Bad, because I can see my grand plans of working on a particularly difficult piece of my thesis fluttering out the window.  Or, rather, fluttering to the window, crashing into the tightly drawn curtains, and exploding into a sizzling smoke cloud.
{source}

And because I don't like my blog posts to be all doom and gloom, I do have two other little things to chat about.

First, a bloggy friend of mine is selling some really cute shirts to raise money for their South Korean adoption.
You know you want to check them out by clicking here!

Secondly, I have been e-mailing my tush off getting things all settled with our past auction!  As soon as I have a final total, ya'll will be the first to know!  One of our donors, the Lily Big Boutique, is willing to give us 10% of all sales from her store if you purchase something by Friday (Feb. 25, 2011) and tell her Expecting a Blessing sent you!  One of my favorite items?  This sign!
The perfect wedding, engagement, anniversary, Mother's Day, Father's Day, any day gift!  The wooden sign can be painted any color to match your home decor (and obviously with YOUR family name...not the one pictured...unless you happen to be Christie & Andy Martin).  So...if you are interested...click here to check that out.

Now, if ya'll will excuse me...I'm going to go crawl back into bed.  Actually, for the sake of honestly, I am already in bed.  Nap time?  I think so...

Much love,
a germy Future Mama

Taiwan!

What do all of these things have in common?

These are all pictures from our child's birth country.  We have been praying, researching, and e-mailing for months.  This is the official announcement...we are adopting from TAIWAN!

As most adoptive parents know, this is a tough decision.  With over 147 million orphans worldwide in need of homes, we often felt torn in many directions while trying to figure out the birth country of our baby.  The need is great in so many countries.

In case you are curious, here's our "Top Ten List" on why Taiwan.

10.  Did you see those pictures above?!  What a beautiful country!  I cannot wait to return again and again with our child to visit.
9.  Taiwan's orphanages are few and full.  The stigma of being an unwed mother is severe.  As a result, the abortion rate is estimated to be higher than the birth rate.  This is not a pro-choice decision...these women have no choice.  I have more on this later...
8.  We know three people who speak Chinese!  Hopefully they can teach us a bit ;-)
7.  We meet all the age, marriage, and other requirements for adopting from this country.
6.  Infertility in Taiwan is considered shameful.  Couples would much rather spend tens of thousands of dollars on expensive medical procedures and/or surrogacy before considering adoption.  As a result, only 10% of Taiwanese orphans are adopted by Taiwanese families.
5.  Already, we know four families in our town with adopted Asian children.  I am thrilled that my child will be able to see other families that "look" like ours.  In our own church!
4.  The university I work for has a phenomenal Asian mentor program for adopted kids.  The international students invite families with adopted children to holiday celebrations, cultural events, and so much more!
3.  We love Asian food and totally want to learn to cook it better.  There will be all sorts of posts on our kitchen disasters adventures to come ;-)
2.  Currently, only one trip is required to complete the adoption.  If we happen to travel in the summer, we will be able to stay much longer!  But if not, then this will be much easier to coordinate with Future Papa's job.
1.  Most importantly, after much prayer, this just feels right.  It's hard to explain, it's difficult to put into words, but we believe this is where God is calling us.

I have been grinning ear to ear lately about this decision.  Please, can I just fly over tomorrow and scoop up one of these?
{source}
Baby steps ya'll, baby steps...

Much love,
Future Mama

P.S.  I have sent out all the e-mails to the highest bidders in our auction!  If you believe you should have gotten one and did not, e-mail me :-)

Auction is OVER

Posted by Angie at 9:00 PM 1 comments
It is Friday, February 18, 2011  at 9:00 pm eastern time...
which means the  Show Some Love Adoption Auction is officially OVER!
For those of you who donated items--THANK YOU!
For those of you who have been praying for us--THANK YOU!
For those of you who advertised for our auction on your blog, facebook, twitter, or other social network--THANK YOU!
And for those of you who bid on our items--THANK YOU!

This weekend, we will be e-mailing highest bidders all sorts of fun directions: how to pay for your item, information we need for customizing your items, learning your mailing address so we can send you your item, etc.  So hang tight!

If you bid on an item, but were sadly outbid by another no-good rascal, there are still other ways you can support us:

1.  Donate.  Donate what you were going to pay for an item that you didn't win.  Donate what you would have paid for a dinner and movie out tonight but didn't because you were glued to your computer, watching the final moments of our auction tick away.  Consider donating, because our hearts are aching for a baby halfway around the world.  And that baby is aching for a family to love him.
2.  Commit to donating an item for a future auction by e-mailing:
expectingablessing@gmail.com
3.  Follow our journey via this blog!  Read it.  Comment on it.  Give your great advice.
4. This one is the most important to us of all: Prayer.  It's powerful.  We love it!

We will announce the final total raised after we receive payment from all our highest bidders.  And I have SO many fun things to blog about next week...it's hard to take a week off blogging!  Again, thank you so much, so much, so much for making our first fundraiser a success.  God bless!!!

Also, be sure to check out our fun sponsors' stores!  These people rock!

Much love,
Future Mama

Show Some Love Adoption Auction

Posted by Angie at 8:59 AM 2 comments
**THIS AUCTION IS CLOSED**
Welcome to our Show Some Love Adoption Auction!
For those of you who may be new here, let me offer you a loud howdy and a warm southern welcome to our humble little blog!  Around here I'm known as Future Mama and I'm married to (pardon my lack of creativity) Future Papa.  We have followed the Lord into the rootin' tootin' world of international adoption and this blog is the documenting proof of our wild journey.  But I digress-check out our tabs above to learn all about us-today ya'll are here about an auction!

But because I can't seem to settle myself down to business, let me hear first call for a barn-shakin' YEE-HAW for our darling donating sponsors, without whom this auction would not be possible.  Thanks to these kind folks we've got some unbelievable items for you to bid on this week, the majority of which are made by hand

Ok, so here is how the Show Some Love Adoption Auction works:

1. Take a gander at the items that are up for auction (Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 9:00 am through Friday, February 18, 2011 at 9:00 pm, eastern time).  HINT: If you click on the picture of the item, it should get bigger, so you can see it better!

2. BID!  To bid, leave a comment with your name, e-mail address, and your bid amount IN THE COMMENT BOX.

3.  Keep on checking on your beloved items and outbid those other no-good, stinkin' rascals!  At a minimum, bids should increase by $1.00 increments.  Remember, auction closes Friday, February 18, 2011 at 9:00 pm, eastern time.

4.  If you win, holler with happiness!  Then just sit on down and wait, because I will send you an e-mail officially letting you know you were the highest bidder and requesting payment for your item (through our secure paypal button).  If the item is custom made, I will also be asking you about your preferences for colors, fabrics, sizes, and such at this point.  After I receive the payment, the item will be shipped to your doorstep.

That's all folks!  Easy as pie!  And the best part?  EVERY CENT YOU DONATE goes straight into our adoption fund!  Thanks for helping us have a baby!  No candles or romantic music necessary!

Without wasting another moment, let me reveal the auction items!  Click on each item to see its bid page.  Happy bidding!
