Taiwan!

What do all of these things have in common?

These are all pictures from our child's birth country.  We have been praying, researching, and e-mailing for months.  This is the official announcement...we are adopting from TAIWAN!

As most adoptive parents know, this is a tough decision.  With over 147 million orphans worldwide in need of homes, we often felt torn in many directions while trying to figure out the birth country of our baby.  The need is great in so many countries.

In case you are curious, here's our "Top Ten List" on why Taiwan.

10.  Did you see those pictures above?!  What a beautiful country!  I cannot wait to return again and again with our child to visit.
9.  Taiwan's orphanages are few and full.  The stigma of being an unwed mother is severe.  As a result, the abortion rate is estimated to be higher than the birth rate.  This is not a pro-choice decision...these women have no choice.  I have more on this later...
8.  We know three people who speak Chinese!  Hopefully they can teach us a bit ;-)
7.  We meet all the age, marriage, and other requirements for adopting from this country.
6.  Infertility in Taiwan is considered shameful.  Couples would much rather spend tens of thousands of dollars on expensive medical procedures and/or surrogacy before considering adoption.  As a result, only 10% of Taiwanese orphans are adopted by Taiwanese families.
5.  Already, we know four families in our town with adopted Asian children.  I am thrilled that my child will be able to see other families that "look" like ours.  In our own church!
4.  The university I work for has a phenomenal Asian mentor program for adopted kids.  The international students invite families with adopted children to holiday celebrations, cultural events, and so much more!
3.  We love Asian food and totally want to learn to cook it better.  There will be all sorts of posts on our kitchen disasters adventures to come ;-)
2.  Currently, only one trip is required to complete the adoption.  If we happen to travel in the summer, we will be able to stay much longer!  But if not, then this will be much easier to coordinate with Future Papa's job.
1.  Most importantly, after much prayer, this just feels right.  It's hard to explain, it's difficult to put into words, but we believe this is where God is calling us.

I have been grinning ear to ear lately about this decision.  Please, can I just fly over tomorrow and scoop up one of these?

Baby steps ya'll, baby steps...

Much love,
Future Mama

P.S.  I have sent out all the e-mails to the highest bidders in our auction!  If you believe you should have gotten one and did not, e-mail me :-)

Oh, this post has left me tearful!!! Taiwan holds a huge piece of my heart. I fell in love with the people and the culture as a college student on mission. Adopting Laney from such a special place was truly the most amazing thing I have ever been a part of! I can not wait to see where the Lord leads you. I am hoping that it is straight to Chung Yi in TaiPei where Laney received such loving care that I still thank the Lord for!! YAY!!!!!

Congrats on your big decision! Another terrific thing about Taiwan is that you may well get to meet your child's birth family. We are so grateful we had that opportunity.
